Project “Soulmates”
Illustration | Personal | Spring 2016
This was a non-profit, collaborative effort that I started with a group of 21 other artists from around the world during my last semester in college.
Project Soulmates is an illustrated narrative centered around the poem “Twenty-Five Lives” by Hwei Lim, following an artistic exploration of two characters that have gained immense popularity from the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens.
Artists were challenged to draw ideas that could be unified & strung together into a cohesive visual narrative. The project was started March of 2016 and completed two months after.
My contributions to it included the conceptualization, creative direction of the team, and three illustrations—the first two pieces pictured on the right, as well as a third collaborative illustration with three other artists (please see here for the collaborative process.)
Our process consisted of brainstorming, task coordination and artistic critique between group members, carried out through Skype and Google Drive. We utilized 3 separate storyboards for sketches, first drafts, and final compositions. In addition to the scheduling, we abided by artistic parameters to ensure cohesion, such as a limited color palette (pictured below)
While fun, the project was not without its challenges. Working with so many artists, it was necessary to reconcile & compromise differing visions—and across different time zones!
Still, the endeavor was both worth it & incredibly rewarding, because it was a first time experience in a collaboration of this scale for many of the participating artists.
The full project can be viewed below. :)
